In order to make it easier for you to plan your family’s next trip to PTown, the following are family-friendly activities you and children can enjoy based on the length of time you have in Ptown. We’ve also made suggestions on what to do based on the ages of your youngsters, be they little ones, children or teenagers.

Either way, we know that you and your children will have a fun-filled stay here!

Tots = infants, toddlers and preschoolers

Tweens = those in middle school and/or 11 and 12 years old

Beaches: Race Point or Herring Cove
Appropriate for: all ages
Family-tested tips:
• Both of these spectacular beaches are part of the National Seashore yet have very gentle waters that are perfect even for little ones.
• Herring Cove’s parking lot fills up by mid-morning during high season so get there early.

Shopping: Commercial Street
Appropriate for: all ages
Family-tested tips:
• Stroll colorful Commercial Street for as much time as you have. There’s something here for everyone.
• This street might feel crowded in July and August for those with strollers; you may want to avoid peak time such as dinner time and evening. Shops on Commercial Street are open late during July and August so this makes a great after-dinner family activity.

Appropriate for: kids, tweens and teens
Family-tested tips:
• Do this in the morning while kids have lots of energy to climb all the stairs to the top.
• Tots will probably not be able to make the climb to the top.
• Bring a camera for the awesome view of the tip of Cape Cod.

Family-tested tips:
• The calm waters of Provincetown Harbor make an excellent back drop for sunset photos.

IF YOUR FAMILY HAS A WEEKEND IN PTOWN

Cape Cod National Seashore Park, Beech Forest

Above suggested itinerary for one day in PTown in addition to:

Bicycling on National Seashore paths
Appropriate for: all ages
Family-tested tips:
• Make sure you bring food and water for your excursion.
• The rugged scenery and rolling dunes necessitate photo stops!

Whale watching
Appropriate for: kids, tweens and teens
Family-tested tips:
• Make a reservation ahead of time since whale watches from PTown are THE BEST on the East Coast!
• Toddlers might not enjoy this excursion due to the confines of the boats.
• If your child is prone to seasickness, give him/her Dramamine or Bonine prior to departure.

Shuttle to Long Point
Take a 10 minute shuttle to the very tip of Cape Cod
Appropriate for all ages and a fabulous family day.
Be prepared … It is you the sand and the sea. Oh and Long Point Lighthouse!
What you need … you need to bring with you. But … it is SO worth the trip!
Bring sunblock, umbrellas, beach shoes, water, food, a camera, etc.
Be sure to bring a bag to collect treasures in and another to put your trash in!

Beech Forest: It’s for the birds!
Appropriate for: all ages
Family-tested tips:
• Since PTown sticks out 40 miles from the mainland, it is a migratory spot for birds. Beech Forest’s short walking trails provide opportunities to bird watch.
• Explain to children ahead of time that the quieter they are, the more birds they’ll spot.

• The gentle waters here are perfect for all ages, especially little ones.

• Perfect for little ones to blow off some steam any time.

• Check out the library’s schedule of children’s events prior to your visit. Even when there aren’t events, children’s books and a play kitchen await.
• Bring your camera for a photo of the huge replica ship in the center of the children’s section.

West End Breakwater

Walk the breakwater to Long Point:
Appropriate for: tweens, teens
** Please note:
Crossing the breakwater can be dangerous when rocks are wet from splashing waves.
Beware of the tide as at some high tides you are unable to cross.
Family-tested tips:
• This 1.2 mile walk is awesome but children and parents must be in reasonably good shape for the walk over the breakwater’s boulders.
• Sneakers are suggested, not flip flops.
• Bring plenty of water and snacks since there are no facilities.
• Bring binoculars and camera for bird sightings.

Water Sports: Make a splash!

Family-tested tips:
• For up-closed and personal views of PTown harbor, book these water activities ahead of time.
• You will have to adhere to individual outfitter guidelines in regards to their minimum age recommendations.
