More About the Inn
The Brasswood Inn is a stately, 11-room Victorian mansion with updated amenities and ample indoor and outdoor space for guests to enjoy. The term “Brasswood” is a musical reference inspired by the materials used to create co-owners Tom’s and Brian’s primary instruments: the trumpet (brass) and the marimba (wood), respectively. Music plays such an important role in their lives that each room is now named after an influential American composer, songwriter and/or performer who has had a profound impact on them personally and has contributed significantly to the identity of American music.

IF YOUR FAMILY HAS ONE DAY IN PTOWN

Hot day at Herring Cove Beach
Beaches: Race Point or Herring Cove

Family-tested tips:
• Stroll colorful Commercial Street for as much time as you have. There’s something here for everyone.

Provincetown is deemed the “coolest” spot on Cape Cod for families with teens.
In this section, teen who visits PTown annually have provided input in regards to their favorite Provincetown spots.
18-year old Alex writes:

Alex
PTown is known for its eclectic atmosphere. It’s an environment that serves as a “place to go” on any given night on a Cape Cod vacation. I’m 18 years old and never get tired of hanging out in PTown. My family and cousins vacation in Cape Cod each summer so I have been lucky to have spent many exciting nights in Provincetown with my cousins who are slightly older than I. Even if your teenager doesn’t have any companions their own age on vacation with them, parents will enjoy some of our regular hangouts in Ptown as well.
After a long day at one of the Provincetown beaches—my personal favorite is Herring Cove—we’re usually pretty tired from all of the energy we exerted sitting on the beach all day (sarcasm intended). Therefore, a journey into PTown is always welcomed! We soon make our way to one of our favorite eateries for a fun, group family dinner. After meandering down Commercial Street (the main avenue in PTown) for a while and popping our heads into various shops, the parents usually decide to let us “kids” (teenagers) have some fun on our own.
When the sun goes down in Provincetown, vampires unfortunately don’t come out (oh darn!), but the street definitely has a livelier and sometimes “adult” vibe to it. There are many types of entertainment available from comedy to musical productions and many restaurants stay open late. As teenagers, just walking this street at night is the most exciting to us due to the constant amusement anywhere on the street, including street performers. Some of the spots we like to stop at include: dessert places, bookstores, jewelry shops and the henna tattoo kiosk. Other times, we just like to buy an iced tea or coffee and wander down quieter MacMillan Pier and watch the sunset over the water.
Provincetown during the day vs. Provincetown later at night may be different venues for different age groups and interests, but regardless, PTown offers fun for any age. From beaches to restaurants to shops to entertainment, Provincetown is probably one of the most animated and colorful locales on the Cape. Our annual two-week stay in Cape Cod would not be the same without our many visits to PTown – with and without our parents!

Provincetown Attractions
WHAT TO DO IN PROVINCETOWN
It’s impossible to define what attracts people to Provincetown: for some it’s our world-class beaches, for others, it’s the art, for many it’s the food and shopping. You can’t miss the Pilgrim Monument which commemorates the Pilgrims First Landing in Provincetown (1620), but neither do you want to miss the night life, when Commercial Street becomes a cabaret for all. The attraction may be a quiet walk in Beech Forest, bird watching, painting, reading Mary Oliver’s poems . . . there’s something for everyone!

Friday, June 10-Sunday, July 24 Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Philip Malicoat Exhibition: Large Paintings. The exhibition is curated by two of the artist’s granddaughters, Breon Dunigan and Robena Malicoat. Philip Malicoat was part of a large family of Provincetown artists spanning multiple generations dating back to the early 1900s. Considered the family’s patriarch, Philip Cecil Malicoat was a child of farmers with little exposure to the arts, first in Oklahoma, then in Indiana, before coming to Provincetown in 1929 to study with Charles Hawthorne. Malicoat went on to build a life in Provincetown, meeting his wife, the artist Barbara Haven Brown, and together raising two children, Martha and Conrad, both of whom became accomplished artists. Malicoat was active in Provincetown arts community as a member of the Provincetown Art Association and Beachcomber’s Club, a teacher, a painter, and, in 1968, a co-founder of the Fine Arts Work Center. Maura Coughlin’s writes in her essay, Immersed in Half-Light: “Malicoat’s landscape paintings, like those of his good friend Edwin Dickinson, offer sensory encounters: in the nacreous grays of Provincetown’s silvery mists, and dense, wet fogs we experience the temperature, breeze and humidity of the place. The severe blankness and obscurity of the back shore — whether stormy or still — speaks of somatic absorption, of walking and inhabiting the shoreline and knowing it viscerally. Unlike his generally smaller landscapes, Malicoat’s large figure paintings have remained in his family and are likely a surprising discovery for the many viewers of this exhibition. The enigmatic narratives of these studio paintings plumb the potential of still life and figural assemblages to convey symbolic gravity or allegory, and they take various approaches to the personhood of represented figures.” – PAAM.org

Cape Cod Vacation Remembered from Childhood
There is a long tradition of people vacationing in Provincetown who tell us they came here as children with their parents and have come back to recreate this experience ~ except now they have children of their own (and grandparents). The family bonding that a vacation together creates never goes out of style and is recognized by family and child psychologists as essential to keep families together as the children grow older.

Family Week Event in Provincetown

Summertime! Race Point Beach
Provincetown: Family Place
Many things have changed about Provincetown in the past 50 years but one thing remains the same ~ it’s a great place for families and children. There are many activities which both parents and their children can enjoy as a family. Of course there are always the beaches: harbor beaches ( the West End parking lot is a favorite with local parents with toddlers and young children), bay beaches where the family car can be backed right up to the beach (Herring Cove in the National Seashore Park) and of course world-famous Race Point ocean beach for older children and their parents. Race Point beach is regularly rated in the top ten beaches in the world.

Let’s splash some water!
Safe Haven
When parents are asked ‘why Provincetown?’ invariably the response is that it is a safe place for children. Parents of teenagers ‘let’ their kids go into town on their own, knowing that they will be okay in a town which considers everyone part of one big family. “We take care of our own” is the long-standing motto of the Portuguese descended families extends to residents and visitors alike.

Holidays are magical in Provincetown! Come and see Lobster Pot Tree!
Family Activities
Besides the beaches there are critter cruises, shuttles to Long Point which combine a boat ride with a remote bay beach (picnicking), the around town trolley just for the fun of it, whale watching and dune tours (educational and fun for all ages) and the best attraction for kids old enough to swim on their own – the West End Racing Club open to all children, local and visiting. Generations of Provincetown kids have learned to swim and sail at the Club and also bond with other kids facing the challenges of swimming and boating, and life in general.

Happy face at MacMillan Pier
Family Week
There is a Family Week the last week of July which originally started as a gathering of same-sex parents needing to bond with their children in the safety and tolerance of Provincetown. But the fun was contagious and now families of all stripes come for that week. Commercial Street is jammed with strollers and kids eating ice cream. There are special events just for kids, of course, and plenty of time for parents to network and learn from one another.

Great fun to watch Provincetown parades!
Family Festivals
And speaking of Portuguese, there are several festivals, like the Portuguese Festival in June, which are a load of fun for the whole family. Who doesn’t like a parade on Fourth of July (Provincetown always celebrates on the day of the Fourth with a parade and fireworks), and the Carnival Parade in August which is exciting and nosy for everyone, with floats playing live music and people dressed in daring costumes. Upwards of 60,000 people (and lots of families) jam the town for that event, all in good fun!

Provincetown Portuguese Festival
So please consider a vacation here with your family. Your children will remember it for a lifetime.
