More About the Inn
The Brasswood Inn is a stately, 11-room Victorian mansion with updated amenities and ample indoor and outdoor space for guests to enjoy. The term “Brasswood” is a musical reference inspired by the materials used to create co-owners Tom’s and Brian’s primary instruments: the trumpet (brass) and the marimba (wood), respectively. Music plays such an important role in their lives that each room is now named after an influential American composer, songwriter and/or performer who has had a profound impact on them personally and has contributed significantly to the identity of American music.

IF YOUR FAMILY HAS ONE DAY IN PTOWN
Beaches: Race Point or Herring Cove
Appropriate for: all ages
Family-tested tips:
• Both of these spectacular beaches are part of the National Seashore yet have very gentle waters that are perfect even for little ones.
• Herring Cove’s parking lot fills up by mid-morning during high season so get there early.
Shopping: Commercial Street
Appropriate for: all ages
Family-tested tips:
• Stroll colorful Commercial Street for as much time as you have. There’s something here for everyone.
• This street might feel crowded in July and August for those with strollers; you may want to avoid peak time such as dinner time and evening. Shops on Commercial Street are open late during July and August so this makes a great after-dinner family activity.
Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum
Appropriate for: kids, tweens and teens
Family-tested tips:
• Do this in the morning while kids have lots of energy to climb all the stairs to the top.
• Tots will probably not be able to make the climb to the top.
• Bring a camera for the awesome view of the tip of Cape Cod.
Sunset Photos
Appropriate for: all ages
Family-tested tips:
• The calm waters of Provincetown Harbor make an excellent back drop for sunset photos.
IF YOUR FAMILY HAS A WEEKEND IN PTOWN
Above suggested itinerary for one day in PTown in addition to:
Bicycling on National Seashore paths
Appropriate for: all ages
Family-tested tips:
• Make sure you bring food and water for your excursion.
• The rugged scenery and rolling dunes necessitate photo stops!
Whale watching
Appropriate for: kids, tweens and teens
Family-tested tips:
• Make a reservation ahead of time since whale watches from PTown are THE BEST on the East Coast!
• Toddlers might not enjoy this excursion due to the confines of the boats.
• If your child is prone to seasickness, give him/her Dramamine or Bonine prior to departure.
Shuttle to Long Point
Take a 10 minute shuttle to the very tip of Cape Cod
Appropriate for all ages and a fabulous family day.

Bayside Beaches:
Appropriate for: all ages
Family-tested tips:
• The gentle waters here are perfect for all ages, especially little ones.
Playgrounds:
East End Playground at Howland and Bradford Streets
West End Playground at Nickerson and Bradford Streets

• Perfect for little ones to blow off some steam any time.

• Bring your camera for a photo of the huge replica ship in the center of the children’s section.
Walk the breakwater to Long Point:
Appropriate for: tweens, teens
** Please note:
Crossing the breakwater can be dangerous when rocks are wet from splashing waves.
Beware of the tide as at some high tides you are unable to cross.
Family-tested tips:
• This 1.2 mile walk is awesome but children and parents must be in reasonably good shape for the walk over the breakwater’s boulders.
• Sneakers are suggested, not flip flops.
• Bring plenty of water and snacks since there are no facilities.
• Bring binoculars and camera for bird sightings.
Water Sports: Make a splash!
Sailing, kayaking and fishing
Appropriate for: kids, tweens and teens
Family-tested tips:

In this section, teen who visits PTown annually have provided input in regards to their favorite Provincetown spots.
18-year old Alex writes:
PTown is known for its eclectic atmosphere. It’s an environment that serves as a “place to go” on any given night on a Cape Cod vacation. I’m 18 years old and never get tired of hanging out in PTown. My family and cousins vacation in Cape Cod each summer so I have been lucky to have spent many exciting nights in Provincetown with my cousins who are slightly older than I. Even if your teenager doesn’t have any companions their own age on vacation with them, parents will enjoy some of our regular hangouts in Ptown as well.
After a long day at one of the Provincetown beaches—my personal favorite is Herring Cove—we’re usually pretty tired from all of the energy we exerted sitting on the beach all day (sarcasm intended). Therefore, a journey into PTown is always welcomed! We soon make our way to one of our favorite eateries for a fun, group family dinner. After meandering down Commercial Street (the main avenue in PTown) for a while and popping our heads into various shops, the parents usually decide to let us “kids” (teenagers) have some fun on our own.
When the sun goes down in Provincetown, vampires unfortunately don’t come out (oh darn!), but the street definitely has a livelier and sometimes “adult” vibe to it. There are many types of entertainment available from comedy to musical productions and many restaurants stay open late. As teenagers, just walking this street at night is the most exciting to us due to the constant amusement anywhere on the street, including street performers. Some of the spots we like to stop at include: dessert places, bookstores, jewelry shops and the henna tattoo kiosk. Other times, we just like to buy an iced tea or coffee and wander down quieter MacMillan Pier and watch the sunset over the water.
Provincetown during the day vs. Provincetown later at night may be different venues for different age groups and interests, but regardless, PTown offers fun for any age. From beaches to restaurants to shops to entertainment, Provincetown is probably one of the most animated and colorful locales on the Cape. Our annual two-week stay in Cape Cod would not be the same without our many visits to PTown – with and without our parents!
PROVINCETOWN HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER!
BEACHES
Fun in the sun in our pristine National Seashore Park.
RACE POINT is our ocean beach where wave action is most likely to be found! HERRING COVE is gentler and great for smaller children. There are bath houses @ both beaches and a food stand at Herring Cove. Parking is $20 per car per day but there are weekly passes available to purchase if your stay is longer!
Check our Beaches page here…
ADVENTURE BEACHING
You can take a shuttle to LONG POINT which is the farthest piece of connecting land on the East coast (next stop England)! Long Point is pristine with 2 lighthouses, miles of natural beaches, bird nesting, and sand dunes…you need to bring water, picnic lunch, beach toys & towels and enjoy a wonderful day exploring and playing! Take the SHUTTLE boat from both MacMillan Wharf in the center of Provincetown and FLYER’S BOAT YARD in the West end of town. For kids who stay for a month or two in the summer there is a fantastic sailing program where kids from 8 to 14 learn to SAIL with qualified instructors…it’s called the WEST END CHILDREN’S COMMUNITY SAILING and runs from July 1st to August 20th. It’s very inexpensive and a great experience for kids who want to meet other kids and learn rules of the water in a safe environment.
You can also rent a boat yourself from FLYER’S BOAT YARD, or you can join a sailing excursion from MacMillan Pier.

SHOPS FOR KIDS
All shops are located all over Commercial Street and a lot of the fun is simply looking for them but the most popular store for decades that shouldn’t be missed is MARINE SPECIALTIES…YOU can’t believe what you can find there from old fashioned marbles to underwater diving suits, old sailer, marine, army hats and everything in between…you can spend a lot of time in just this one store!
Commercial Street is an activity in itself with street performers, face painting and just people watching…pick a spot like the benches in front of town hall, let the kids can play on the lawn and enjoy the parade of people passing by!

WHAT TO DO IN PROVINCETOWN
It’s impossible to define what attracts people to Provincetown: for some it’s our world-class beaches, for others, it’s the art, for many it’s the food and shopping. You can’t miss the Pilgrim Monument which commemorates the Pilgrims First Landing in Provincetown (1620), but neither do you want to miss the night life, when Commercial Street becomes a cabaret for all. The attraction may be a quiet walk in Beech Forest, bird watching, painting, reading Mary Oliver’s poems . . . there’s something for everyone!

Cape Cod Vacation Remembered from Childhood
There is a long tradition of people vacationing in Provincetown who tell us they came here as children with their parents and have come back to recreate this experience ~ except now they have children of their own (and grandparents). The family bonding that a vacation together creates never goes out of style and is recognized by family and child psychologists as essential to keep families together as the children grow older.
More information here: Family Itineraries, Parent’s Guide, Activities for Kids
Provincetown: Family Place
Many things have changed about Provincetown in the past 50 years but one thing remains the same ~ it’s a great place for families and children. There are many activities which both parents and their children can enjoy as a family. Of course there are always the beaches: harbor beaches ( the West End parking lot is a favorite with local parents with toddlers and young children), bay beaches where the family car can be backed right up to the beach (Herring Cove in the National Seashore Park) and of course world-famous Race Point ocean beach for older children and their parents. Race Point beach is regularly rated in the top ten beaches in the world.
Safe Haven
When parents are asked ‘why Provincetown?’ invariably the response is that it is a safe place for children. Parents of teenagers ‘let’ their kids go into town on their own, knowing that they will be okay in a town which considers everyone part of one big family. “We take care of our own” is the long-standing motto of the Portuguese descended families extends to residents and visitors alike.
Family Activities
Besides the beaches there are critter cruises, shuttles to Long Point which combine a boat ride with a remote bay beach (picnicking), the around town trolley just for the fun of it, whale watching and dune tours (educational and fun for all ages) and the best attraction for kids old enough to swim on their own – the West End Racing Club open to all children, local and visiting. Generations of Provincetown kids have learned to swim and sail at the Club and also bond with other kids facing the challenges of swimming and boating, and life in general.
Family Week
There is a Family Week the last week of July which originally started as a gathering of same-sex parents needing to bond with their children in the safety and tolerance of Provincetown. But the fun was contagious and now families of all stripes come for that week. Commercial Street is jammed with strollers and kids eating ice cream. There are special events just for kids, of course, and plenty of time for parents to network and learn from one another.
Family Festivals
And speaking of Portuguese, there are several festivals, like the Portuguese Festival in June, which are a load of fun for the whole family. Who doesn’t like a parade on Fourth of July (Provincetown always celebrates on the day of the Fourth with a parade and fireworks), and the Carnival Parade in August which is exciting and nosy for everyone, with floats playing live music and people dressed in daring costumes. Upwards of 60,000 people (and lots of families) jam the town for that event, all in good fun!
So please consider a vacation here with your family. Your children will remember it for a lifetime.
