With a population estimated at just 372, North Atlantic right whales are critically endangered. April 24th was designated Massachusetts Right Whale Day in 2020, and is intended to raise awareness and encourage conservation. The day was inspired by an encounter with a right whale off Race Point, Provincetown by South Shore resident Matt Delaney in 2004. Delaney later urged Representative Josh Cutler (D- Plymouth) to sponsor legislation designating the day Massachusetts Right Whale Day.
