PROVINCETOWN, MA— Saint Mary of the Harbor (SMOTH) is embarking on a major expansion of its community outreach through several upcoming musical and cultural events. This will bring more activities to Provincetown’s East End, widen the type of offerings to the community and strengthen the church’s local footprint.
Some of the events planned were successfully introduced during the last year, and others are reimaginings of cherished programs, such as its Annual Summer Fair and Art and Spirit Auction.
One of the Episcopal Church’s most ambitious offerings will be its East End Music Program, introduced last year. These concerts give several talented musicians a live-performance opportunity. Although free of charge, a goodwill offering may be given.
The first in this series will be a classical vocal recital on Friday, May 22, at 5:30pm, with Colin Levin, baritone, and Evan Fein, pianist/composer. It is a concert of standard Nordic repertory and new queer works, including the world premiere of Fein’s song cycle “American Boy,” with lyrics by poet Jeffery Berg. Levin and Fein have performed as a duo on tour in Iceland, the Faroe Islands and throughout the U.S., including Puerto Rico, Austin and Seattle. They are also frequent guests of Scandinavia House in New York City.
On Sunday, May 26, at 2pm, the concert “One Spirit, One Voice” will be a celebration of Pentecost, with cellist Tyler James, violinist Loren Lee and pianist Constantine Finehouse. The program will feature Edvard Grieg’s “Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 45,” and two works by Beethoven: “Cello Sonata in D Major, Op. 102/2” and “Ghost,” his “Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No.”
Classical and popular works by living LGBTQIA+ composers and arrangers will be presented by the National LGBTQIA+ Flute Choir as part of the Provincetown Pride Concert on Saturday, June 6, 4pm. Concert organizer Vincenzo Volpe is a performer and fulltime musician with the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps in Washington, D.C.
Five Jazz Vespers concerts, featuring pianist John Thomas, are scheduled for June 18, July 16, August 13,September 17 and October 15. Each will be followed by a garden party on the SMOTH grounds.
In addition to the concerts, SMOTH will continue its free movie nights. It will co-sponsor with the Provincetown Theater “Communion” on June 24, and independently present “Mama Mia” July 17 and “Grease” August 7.
This extensive lineup takes its place beside SMOTH’s popular annual events: the Summer Fair August 1 and the reception for its Art & Spirit online art auction August 21.
“We at St. Mary of the Harbor look forward to expanding our community programming at our beautiful waterside venue in the East End,” said the Rev. Brian Raiche, SMOTH’s pastor. “We’re especially proud to offer these programs free of charge.”
