Seals are the major prey species for the great white shark, and as the seal population increases, the great white shark has become more numerous. There are confirmed reports of great white sharks feeding on seals close to shore. Spotter planes flying along the Outer Cape have also observed great white sharks near swimming beaches. Click here to learn about Shark Safety at Cape Cod.

Humpback Whale

Humpback Whale ~ Drawing courtesy Dolphin Fleet of Provincetown

WHALES PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART in Provincetown’s economy in the 19th century and this tradition is carried on today as thousands of whalewatchers depart from Provincetown each year to observe, rather than kill, these now endangered mammals in their natural habitat.

Whale watching as a science and tourist attraction started on the East coast in 1975 when scientist Stormy Mayo from the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies teamed up with charter fishing boat Captain Al Avellar to observe and study the three species of whales which are found in the waters around Provincetown: the fin, humpback, and right whale.

Fin and humpbacks are regularly seen from April to October, and scientists have discovered that Cape Cod Bay is an important breeding ground for the extremely rare North Atlantic right whale.

The Spring and Fall are excellent times to go whalewatching in addition to taking advantage of the restful off-season ambiance of Provincetown. All whale watching boats leave Provincetown Harbor from MacMillan Pier in the Town Center. Summer is a great time to whale watch, too! Arrive early to ensure a parking space.

Beth Ann Boat Excursions

Photo Gallery  Kid Friendly  Waterfront  Whale Watching

Beth Ann Boat Excursions operates off of MacMillan Pier, has two spacious boats, and offers a variety of types of trips. Our two boats can accommodate up to six passengers, have sound systems, refrigerators for your food and drink, and full size bathrooms. Choose between the 38 foot Beth Ann, our flagship, which has multiple relaxation areas and an upper deck, or the 29 foot Bethie, a boat reminiscent of the old cruising boats of Newport, Rhode Island.

We offer a number of fishing trips – for striped bass, bluefish, and even tuna. We supply all the equipment you need, help you along if you are new to fishing, and fillet your catch for that nights dinner. We have all day, half day and a shorter condensed trips so we can fit into whatever your schedule dictates.

Whale watching, Beth Ann Boat Excursions, and Provincetown go hand in hand, and we offer you the opportunity to see these tremendous mammals up close and personal, but without the 250 other people you contend with on the big boats. We go where the whales are, and if we have to go a little further and stay out a little longer to give you a fantastic experience we will.

Looking for something different? Try our two hour Harbor or Sunset cruises, or thrill your kids with the Kids Sea Creature cruise. Or go bigger, and join us on our quest to find and watch the predator of the sea, the Great White Shark!

Our half day Fun in the Sun trip lets you enjoy the water and the beach without the crowds. Jump aboard, and before you know it we will be anchored within wading distance to the beach of your choice. Stay on the boat basking in the sun and taking the occasional refreshing dip in the sea, and listen to the tunes with your favorite drink and cuisine of choice.

Center for Coastal Studies Provincetown

For over 40 years, the Center for Coastal Studies has served as Provincetown’s hometown organization for coastal and marine environmental awareness, research, and education, yet enjoys an international reputation for its extensive research on the humpback whale that is the basis of the town’s whale watching industry, and the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale that visits our waters January-May.

The Center is a pioneer in marine animal disentanglement, regional water quality monitoring, high resolution seafloor mapping, seal and fisheries research, marine debris and marine plastics studies, and some of the earliest and ongoing studies of land-sea interaction.

The Center’s newly renovated Hiebert Marine Laboratory is open year-round and features the only large whale skeleton on Cape Cod, that of Spinnaker, a 37-foot humpback whale who died of entanglement in 2015, as well as specialty books on marine science for sale. We also offer field walks, educational programs, beautifully designed apparel at our kiosk on MacMillan Pier in season, and the popular winter lecture series at Napi’s the last Wednesday of the month, October—May.

The entire Atlantic Ocean coastline of Cape Cod was preserved as a National Park (CCNS) by President John F. Kennedy in 1961.

The National Seashore offers several gateways to some of the most valuable real estate in America which can be accessed with an Entrance Pass purchased at booth at beach entrances.

Herring Cove Beach between Wood End and Race Point Lighthouses has ample parking and a beach facility which includes toilets, showers and take away food for the complete ‘day at the beach.’ Herring Cove parking on the Race Point end also offers access to a bike/walking trail that goes through the most rugged dunes and offers vistas of the salt marshes surrounding Hatches Harbor.

Be Shark Smart

Cape Cod’s waters are part of a natural and wild marine ecosystem with a rich diversity of sea life, including sharks and seals. Seals are the major prey species for the great white shark. Sharks often feed on seals close to shore, and they’ve been observed near swimming beaches.

While it is rare for a great white shark to bite a human, since 2012, sharks have bitten people three times in the waters off Truro and Wellfleet. One bite, in 2018, resulted in a fatality. With coastline topography changes and sharks and seals in the ocean, any level of activity in the water, whether wading, swimming, or surfing, will pose a different degree of risk.

Everyone going into the ocean should exercise caution and be willing to assume the level of risk associated with their behavior prior to entering the water.

If you decide to venture into the waters off Cape Cod, learn how to be Shark Smart.

Please link this https://www.nps.gov/caco/planyourvisit/sharksafety.htm to learn how to be Shark Smart above

Do Not Feed or Touch Wildlife

Wildlife accustomed to being fed will become aggressive to obtain food. This includes coyote and fox. There have been serious incidents involving bites to people and pets. Report injured or deceased wildlife to park staff. Never touch injured wildlife.

Pet Friendly BusinessesDog Fancy Magazine named Provincetown America’s most dog friendly town, for good reason. Ptown loves all dogs – ours and our visitors, and treats them well with lots of love and yes, spoiling them with delicious treats and new coat for cold winter. Most shops, galleries, restaurants (with outdoor areas) and some boat charters welcome well behaved dogs at the business owners discretion. Almost all businesses offer treats for lucky doggies or provide a cool drink of water.

Provincetown's beautiful Town Hall decorated for New Year's celebrations!

Provincetown’s beautiful Town Hall decorated for Holiday Season!

Provincetown Town Seal

The Town of Provincetown was incorporated on June 14, 1727 but had been self-governing since the signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor in 1620. The ordinances and by-laws of the Town are enacted by an Annual Town Meeting in the spring and Special Town Meeting in the fall. In between a five-member Board of Selectmen oversees the administration of the Town’s business by the Town Manager and her staff.

The Town must provide all the services of a small city in the summer (30-40,000) based on a local population of 3,300 people year-round. Quite a challenge but the Town takes good care of its visitors and residents alike!

The Provincetown Town has just been completely gutted and renovated to provide modern office space for many of the administrative staff. The exterior of Town Hall was restored to replicate closely its original appearance when it was built in 1885, right down to the paint scheme. Valuable pieces of the Town’s extensive art collection are displayed in Town Hall, which is well worth a visit.

The Provincetown Schools provide good public education from pre-school through 8th grade. Provincetown Schools formally joins the IB community as an IB World School – Middle Years Programme (MYP program) and is now the only school in Massachusetts to offer the IB continuum, grades PK-8th , an incredible accomplishment. Our district is unique because it is situated within a rich cultural, scientific, and technological environment.

Cape Cod Vacation Remembered from Childhood

There is a long tradition of people vacationing in Provincetown who tell us they came here as children with their parents and have come back to recreate this experience ~ except now they have children of their own (and grandparents). The family bonding that a vacation together creates never goes out of style and is recognized by family and child psychologists as essential to keep families together as the children grow older.

More information here: Family Itineraries, Parent’s Guide, Activities for Kids

Summertime! Race Point Beach

Provincetown: Family Place

Many things have changed about Provincetown in the past 50 years but one thing remains the same ~ it’s a great place for families and children. There are many activities which both parents and their children can enjoy as a family. Of course there are always the beaches: harbor beaches ( the West End parking lot is a favorite with local parents with toddlers and young children), bay beaches where the family car can be backed right up to the beach (Herring Cove in the National Seashore Park) and of course world-famous Race Point ocean beach for older children and their parents. Race Point beach is regularly rated in the top ten beaches in the world.

Let's splash some water!

Let’s splash some water!

Safe Haven

When parents are asked ‘why Provincetown?’ invariably the response is that it is a safe place for children. Parents of teenagers ‘let’ their kids go into town on their own, knowing that they will be okay in a town which considers everyone part of one big family. “We take care of our own” is the long-standing motto of the Portuguese descended families extends to residents and visitors alike.

Lobster Pot Tree

Holidays are magical in Provincetown! Come and see Lobster Pot Tree!

Family Activities

Besides the beaches there are critter cruises, shuttles to Long Point which combine a boat ride with a remote bay beach (picnicking), the around town trolley just for the fun of it, whale watching and dune tours (educational and fun for all ages) and the best attraction for kids old enough to swim on their own – the West End Racing Club open to all children, local and visiting. Generations of Provincetown kids have learned to swim and sail at the Club and also bond with other kids facing the challenges of swimming and boating, and life in general.

Ptown for Kids

Family Week

There is a Family Week the last week of July which originally started as a gathering of same-sex parents needing to bond with their children in the safety and tolerance of Provincetown. But the fun was contagious and now families of all stripes come for that week. Commercial Street is jammed with strollers and kids eating ice cream. There are special events just for kids, of course, and plenty of time for parents to network and learn from one another.

Provincetown Carnival Parade

Great fun to watch Provincetown parades!

Family Festivals

And speaking of Portuguese, there are several festivals, like the Portuguese Festival in June, which are a load of fun for the whole family. Who doesn’t like a parade on Fourth of July (Provincetown always celebrates on the day of the Fourth with a parade and fireworks), and the Carnival Parade in August which is exciting and nosy for everyone, with floats playing live music and people dressed in daring costumes. Upwards of 60,000 people (and lots of families) jam the town for that event, all in good fun!

Provincetown Portuguese Festival

So please consider a vacation here with your family. Your children will remember it for a lifetime.

Purchase a Paver at the foot of MacMillan Pier

Over the past 30 years we have sustained the building with minor repair work, but today our 106 year old Chamber Building is in need of some significant work. We feel that our “Lady” should have a complete “Facelift” rather than just nips and tucks. Please consider purchasing a paver with your name, business name, or as a dedication in honor of someone special or in memory of a loved one. Your paver will be viewed by thousands of visitors for years to come! Click here for more information about our Paver Project.
